To ignite the American spirit, the Museum proudly welcomes artist Mateo Blanco. Known for his unique renditions of the American flag using uncommon textiles and materials, Blanco will present another artistic twist on “Old Glory” at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in celebration of Labor Day. On Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, Blanco will host an in-gallery workshop, Creation Station, where visitors are invited to create their own personalized American flag art.

Museum of Art in DeLand Showcases Mateo Blanco’s ‘Hopi Girl’ Sculpture

Renowned American artist Mateo Blanco is known for taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary! Now, visitors to the Museum of Art โ€“ DeLand have the chance to see one of his well-known pieces in person. Blancoโ€™s โ€œHopi Girlโ€ is on display from March 15 through July 14, 2024, as part of the museumโ€™s exhibition, “The Figure: Selections from the Permanent Collection.” The piece features a young Hopi girl created entirely out of recycled rope Blanco found while sitting on a Florida beach.

Mateo Blanco, a Colombian American artist who lives in Miami, has had a longtime interest in expressing the lure of Hollywood. He has explored the powerย of the image and fame in his highly original portraits ofย  iconic screen sirens like Jennifer Lawrence, whose portrait he recreated using peanuts, Madonna, Dolly Parton and many Marvel superheroes, Avatar charactersย  as well as beloved Star War characters.

In his latest piece, HOLLYWOOD BY MATEO BLANCO, we can see how the stark white background gives power to the image: white, the color of Marilyn Monroeโ€™s dress; white, the color of the lights that shine and make movies possible; white, the first word uttered when the director begins to shoot; white, the color of the gleaming smiles, the diamonds, the very screen on which all our dreams and movies are projected.

Mateo Blanco is a recognized conceptual artist known for creating vivid portraits from unusual materials that have captured peopleโ€™s imagination.

His portrait of Jennifer Lawrence was made with 10,000 peanuts and the flag of the United States from pieces of cloth.

Much of Mateo’s work is inspired by typography and exploration of the word art. From Cape Town to Paris, his art can be found in private collections and museums all over the world.

Now, his work “Colombia By Mateo Blanco” is part of Francia Escobar’s renowned private collection in Bogota, Colombia.
