As always, Vivienne, aided and abetted by Ida Faerber, has scoured the globe for independent, under-the-radar designers, each with a strong concept, a well-defined design direction, individualistic point of view and sophistication of craftsmanship and use of materials. She explains too that as a historian she particularly appreciates designs that acknowledge and respect the long and rich history of the jewel, its rituals and traditions, while at the same time challenging perceptions of the role and meaning of the jewel. The styles represented in the 2022 Designer Vivarium, as always, are all very different from each other, showing the breadth, depth and versatility of expression in today’s world of contemporary jewellery.
THE FUTURE by Subliminal Projects – New Works by Shantell Martin | Site-Specific Installation
EXHIBITION – From May 7 to June 4 Subliminal Projects is pleased to present THE FUTURE, a site-specific installation, and a series of new works by multidisciplinary artist Shantell Martin
Known for her signature black and white drawings, Martin’s work investigates themes of intersectionality, identity, and play. Rare Porcelain from Imperial Russia by Philip Batenin
This small bell shaped tea cup, manufactured in 1830s by the famous Batenin Porcelain Factory that belonged to a wealthy merchant Philip Batenin, is a perfect example of valuable antique porcelain from the Imperial Russia. The cup features one of the rarest views ever depicted on Batenin’s creations, the Smolny Cathedral on the Neva River, which is painted completely by hand.
A similar cylindrical cup with a view of the Smolny Cathedral was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in June 2007 for £2400. Another is located in the world-famous Hermitage Museum. Nowadays, Batenin’s porcelain is quite rare and highly prized among collectors.
Who is Leonid Lindin
Leonid is one of the most skilled and imaginative precisionism artists in Europe. He he is also a hopeless romantic who uses his talent to paint spectacular fantasy scenes, often with oil on large canvases. Leonid’s artworks take time and anyone who had the pleasure to see them up-close was undoubtedly amazed by his attention to detail.
While Leonid’s favorite genre is seascapes, there are no limits to his imagination. If in real life he is a very modest man, in his art Leonid ventures into far corners of distant galaxies, sails over oceans and seas, and goes into wild winter forest of the north, not to mention the female beauty that occasionally comes to life on his canvas. A true romantic, Leonid paints romance like no one else.
Who is Yuri Tarasov
Yuri Tarasov was one of the strongest painters in the Soviet Union, Russia and Lithuania. While his talent had no borders, Yuri’s fantastic vision and ability to show the true classic Russian art school with a touch of modern European trends made his paintings highly controversial in the Soviet society. As the son of the Head of the Supreme Council of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, he had an opportunity to become one of the best-know artists in the USSR, but Yuri never wanted fame or money, strongly believing that great art must bring recognition and not the other way around. Ignoring the opportunities life gave him, committed only to his art and his family, Yuri Tarasov, nevertheless, became one of the top artists in the entire Soviet Union. The recognition that he so carefully avoided inevitably came to him after each and every one of his exhibitions. His art spoke for itself.

HUNTER BIDEN’S ART – FAME TRUMPS TALENT
OPINION | The rise of Hunter Biden’s art career proves that fame trumps talent. It’s a discouraging lesson for many young, talented artists who are struggling to be noticed in the overcrowded art world. The message is clear, no matter how good your art is, unless you have famous parents, chances are, you won’t make it.
Those that decide to stay in the art game may take away a much more dangerous lesson – to be noticed you must embrace scandalous decadence and become a self-destructive public figure like Hunter Biden. After all it worked for Andy Warhol, who was a lifelong drug addict; it worked for Jackson Pollock, who was an alcoholic for most of his life; it worked for Petr Pavlensky, who nailed his scrotum to the ground; it just may work for you – right?
Who is Czeslaw Znamierowski
Czeslaw Znamierowski was a renowned Soviet Lithuanian painter whose large body of work spanned from the 1920s until the 1970s. During his fifty-year career, he painted over 1,400 landscapes, drew over 800 sketches, and completed over 3,000 artworks. His work is particularly regarded for its featuring of stunning landscapes, some of which cover canvases larger than 8 feet by 4 feet. Due to his affiliation with socialist political movements in Russia, Znamierowski and his work have demonstrated a growing appeal to collectors in foreign markets who hold similar political affinities, particularly China, where his work is reported to have sold for as high as $120,000.
