Richard Diebenkorn’s Painting Sells for $46.4 Million at Christie’s

In a groundbreaking Christie’s auction on November 9, 2023, Richard Diebenkorn’s seminal artwork, “Recollections of a Visit to Leningrad,” achieved a record-setting price of $46,410,000 US. Painted in 1965, this monumental canvas, measuring 181.3 x 211.1 cm, stands as a testament to Diebenkorn’s transformative encounter with the works of Henri Matisse during a rare trip to the Soviet Union in the 1960s. Diebenkorn’s journey to the Soviet Union was part of a cultural exchange initiated by President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev. During his visit, the artist immersed himself in Matisse’s masterpieces, particularly those housed in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). This experience had a profound impact on Diebenkorn, inspiring a shift in his artistic approach towards abstracted planes of rich and vibrant color.

Opening the door with the horn handle reveals partitions andย two small drawers with varnished interiors. It goes without saying that this piece also contains a secret space โ€ฆ location of which must remain a secret!

A Modern Romantic: Reflections on the Art of Tom Glynn

If some artists are born and others made, Tom Glynn is undoubtedly one of the former. Growing up in West Sussex in the 1950s and 60s, he possessed a voraciousย  aesthetic sensibility from the start. Not long after beginning at school, aged five,ย  he spent the best part of a week constructing an elaborate tunneled structure in aย  sandpit โ€“ astonishing his teachers in the process. In subsequent years he fashionedย  animals from plasticine, made assemblages from scavenged wood, sketched onย  scraps of paper, and built miniature model theatres. As he grew older, Glynn becameย  interested in earlier artists, establishing what he has called a โ€˜lifelong friendshipโ€™ย  with the work of Picasso, Matisse, Arp and Brancusi. But his ambitions to becomeย  a serious artist himself only crystallized at the age of fifteen, when he visited theย  studio of the great post-war British sculptor, Robert Adams. Glynn even showedย  the older artist some of his own creations, which Adams is said to have admired.ย
