“I went on the run for a year-and-a-half. I finally got caught and was sentenced to 10-years at Fort Leavenworth, a hard-labor, maximum-security prison for Department of Defense inmates. I lived amongst some of the worst criminals in the world. We had serial killers, rapists, child molesters, and even murderers. Which turned out to be the perfect training ground for me to study these monsters and figure out why they committed these horrific crimes. I did 5-years in total; two-and-a-half on the inside and two-and-a-half on federal parole.”

OPINION | The rise of Hunter Biden’s art career proves that fame trumps talent. It’s a discouraging lesson for many young, talented artists who are struggling to be noticed in the overcrowded art world. The message is clear, no matter how good your art is, unless you have famous parents, chances are, you won’t make it.  

Those that decide to stay in the art game may take away a much more dangerous lesson – to be noticed you must embrace scandalous decadence and become a self-destructive public figure like Hunter Biden. After all it worked for Andy Warhol, who was a lifelong drug addict; it worked for Jackson Pollock, who was an alcoholic for most of his life; it worked for Petr Pavlensky, who nailed his scrotum to the ground; it just may work for you – right?

Let’s say you have discovered yourself as an artist and you want to express yourself in some of the more traditional ways we look at creativity, for example painting, singing, writing music, dancing, or sculpting and designing. If you are certain about the way and the technique you want to express yourself in, but you’re new and haven’t discovered your specific style yet, it can be a very tricky task. It’s not because you don’t have it already but because of the influence of everything around you. It is important to remember you can’t give what you don’t have. We all know this but we tend to forget it while starting to look around us and being affected by what others do and think. This leads us towards the two approaches we will highlight in this article to clarify how you can discover your art style and what actually makes an impression on your creative self.

Art is an expression that needs to be allowed to flow freely. Don’t try to figure out how to do the best piece of art to fit in, do your thing. This is not about being accepted or evaluated. Some people will love you and some won’t. It’s as simple as that and you don’t need anyone’s approval to create the way you create. If you have your motives clear, have written your goals and take action one step at a time then you are doing more than 90% of the population. Most people just think and don’t believe and therefore don’t take action. That is not you. Because you are reading this I know you have a message to deliver, a piece of art that needs to be created and shared with the world.
