Distinguished artist Vian Borchert is presenting LUMINOUS, a solo exhibition centered on light as a metaphor for hope, renewal, clarity and inner awakening. The exhibition runs from August 13 through October 17, 2026, and is being showcased exclusively online through Artsy.

Known for her expressionist approach and poetic treatment of abstraction, Borchert uses her signature blue palette to create atmospheric works inspired by the sea, sky and contemplative qualities of nature. Rather than depicting identifiable locations, the paintings present open-ended environments shaped by intuitive mark-making, lyrical color, expressive brushwork and nostalgic memories.

At the heart of LUMINOUS is Borchert’s sustained interest in light—not simply as a physical phenomenon, but as an idea associated with resilience, possibility and emotional renewal. The exhibition’s work invites viewers to find beauty and tranquility even during periods of uncertainty, presenting light as a persistent presence in both the natural environment and human experience.

“LUMINOUS” describes the exhibition’s central premise: light and color converge to create spaces intended to encourage stillness and reflection. Blue, a longstanding element of Borchert’s visual language, serves as both a reference to the expansiveness of the natural world and a symbolic space for memory, imagination and hope.

An International Exhibition Record

Borchert’s career spans more than two decades and includes more than 100 group and solo exhibitions internationally. Her work has been presented at venues and events including the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, Medinaceli DeArte Museo Contemporáneo in Spain, the SAM Museum in Pennsylvania, Bank Art Fair in Seoul, Art3f International Contemporary Art Fair in Monaco, the AVA Art Festival in Osaka, the World Bank in New York City, the Venice Biennale, Art Basel Miami Beach, the Corcoran Museum of Art and the Arts Club of Washington, among others.

Borchert is a graduate and “Notable Alumni” of the Corcoran College of Art and Design at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She also serves as Art Lead for the Oxford Public Philosophy Journal, based at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Her work has appeared in more than 100 publications, including Museum Week Magazine and The Washington Post. She was recently named by MSN among its “Top 10 Most Creative Artists” and was listed by “Art Market Experts” among the most investable artists of 2025/2026. Beyond her studio practice, Borchert has taught painting and drawing to adults in the Washington, D.C., area for two decades, including at the historic Arts Club of Washington.

With LUMINOUS, Borchert brings these strands of her practice together around a single visual idea: light as both atmosphere and metaphor. The resulting exhibition is an exploration of blue abstraction, memory and the possibility of finding optimism within uncertainty.
